You guys, I have a serious black thumb. I’m trying really hard to do better, and I’m happy to say I’ve actually kept a few plants alive for the past several months, but normally it’s a serious problem. I’m happy to share my solution for keeping houseplants alive since I was recently introduced to a product that helps do just that. The Nimbus Pot is a self-watering planter that allows your plant to decide how much water it needs and when it needs it. You see, part of the reason my plants always die is because apparently you have to water them. I can’t seem to remember this simple task! Luckily now I don’t have to. The Nimbus Pot can keep your plants watered for up to 4 months.
When I first heard about the Nimbus Pot, I was very intrigued since I’m always killing plants. As you can see, it was intriguing to Jonah and Indy too.
The Nimbus Pot allows your plant to dictate how much water it needs, which helps prevent root rot. If you just don’t have a green thumb (guilty!) or if you travel a lot, this is the perfect solution.
Here’s how you set it up.
Adjust the plug on the bottom to indicate whether you’re using it indoors or outdoors.
Fill the plant area with soil.
Make a huge mess in your dining room. Just kidding — ignore that step. Add your plant to the pot.
Rotate and remove the handle.
Fill the reservoir with water.
Insert the handle and then just leave it alone until the float drops, which indicates that you need to refill the water.
I decided to add my snake plant (aka “Mother In-Law’s Tongue”) to the pot.
So far, so good. My plant is still alive after about a month, and I’m leaving it alone. I love having plants in the house, I’m just so irresponsible with them. I’m happy to have found something that makes caring for them easier. I love the modern design of the pot too — the white goes with any design aesthetic, or you can always give it a makeover or pop it into a basket or larger planter if you have a specific look you’re going for.
Check out the Nimbus Pot online to find out more about how it works, plus use the promo code below to get $10 off your purchase now through November 14!
If you end up trying out the Nimbus Pot, I would love to hear your thoughts! What kind of house plants do you love and/or need help keeping alive?

I might need to get one of these. I just killed my monther-in-law’s plant by over watering. 🙁

That is so cool! I”m terrible with plants too so I’ll be checking into this!

Wow, this is exactly what I need! No matter how hard I try, my plants aren’t doing so well and I’m pretty sure I forget to water, or over water them. I didn’t know something like this even existed.
Erin Spain says
I always forget to water mine! This should do the trick.

How cool is that? I could definitely use a self-watering planter cause my thumb isn’t very green!
Erin Spain says
Same here Tonia! I have serious black thumb problems.

I have one of these and it’s AWESOME! I usually kill all potted plants, but not this one!
Erin Spain says
Awesome, Amy! Isn’t this an amazing invention? Hopefully it’s just what I need to help me stop killing plants.

I totally need this! I got an orchid for Christmas last year and I either water it too much, not often enough and now it is almost dead!
Erin Spain says
Wow! And see I’m just impressed that you still have an orchid from last Christmas. I can’t keep an orchid alive for more than a month or two. Haha! I have serious problems.

I have so many plants – I need to get this! p.s. The picture with your baby and the dog is absolutely adorable!

Thanks so much, Mary Beth!

I could definitely use one of these… or four. I actually don’t mind watering my plants, but it’s such a pain getting just the right amount of water into them. It’s not a problem in the summer when you can just let the excess drain out of the bottom, but when you bring them inside it’s a whole different story.
Erin Spain says
I totally agree! I am really bad at figuring out how to properly care for each type of plant. They all have different needs and I can’t keep up!
Malia says
I might be able to actually keep a plant alive if I had this! Very cool!
Erin Spain says
Yes! I’m hoping I will be able to keep this one alive. I don’t have a very good track record!

Wow..this is so neat! I was wondering about some of the other tall plants you have in the house..are they real and, if so, what are they? They are so pretty! I just found your blog via Pinterest (we are getting ready to stain our front porch this wknd so I found your deck staining post)…I adore your style and your house is beautiful!
Erin Spain says
Thanks Dani! The tall plants are real, although one of them isn’t doing too hot at the moment. They are fiddle leaf figs. I have two of those and two snake plants. I found the fiddle leaf figs at The Home Depot for a decent price last year — they can get expensive so I recommend shopping around. I think IKEA sells them too. Have a great weekend!
