A friend of mine recently told me that she made her own laundry detergent, and I was intrigued. She found a recipe on Pinterest, and I decided to try it too. Naturally, if I was going to make my own detergent, that meant that I had to come up with a cute jar to store it in. I made a DIY Laundry Jar using glass paint
and stencils. (We all know that I can’t get enough of my glass paint.)
Homemade Detergent
First, let’s talk about the detergent. My youngest son has pretty sensitive skin, so we’ve always used fragrance/dye-free detergent. When I heard that this homemade detergent is good for sensitive skin, and it saves money and lasts forever (ok, well 9 months, but that’s forever when we’re talking laundry detergent), I was totally on board. As for the recipe, I used this one from Being Creative to Keep My Sanity. Great blog name, right? Please check out her site for all the details on how to make the detergent. She also made a cute jar using vinyl, which is another great option.
An additional tip for making the detergent is to use a heavy-duty garbage bag. This concoction gets a bit heavy and if you use a basic thin white kitchen garbage bag, it will rip. Don’t ask me how I know…
DIY Laundry Jar
As for my jar, of course I busted out my Martha Stewart glass paint and stencils. I used a red opaque color called “Chipotle.” To apply the paint, I used a small foam dauber to dot it on and peeled the stencils off immediately. Super quick and easy! I got the jar for around $10 in the kitchen section at Walmart.
Have you ever made your own laundry detergent? Do you plan on trying it? I’d love to hear about your DIY detergent (and/or detergent jar-decorating) experience!
