I am so excited to tell you about a project that I am working on, and it happens to be the most exciting thing I’ve been a part of since I started this blog. I am going to be partnering with Dwell with Dignity, a nonprofit organization based in Dallas, to help make over a home for a mother and daughter here in Atlanta.
You can check out the Dwell with Dignity website to find out more about the organization, but here is a quote from their site describing what they do:
“We work with agencies that have programs in place to take families from homelessness & poverty to self-sufficiency. They nominate families that have made a commitment to self-sufficiency and we furnish the families’ homes including all furniture, art, bedding, kitchen supplies, food in the pantry and their first night’s meal.”
Ultimately, we will be making over and completely furnishing an apartment for a local mother and her daughter and I could not be more excited!
I was contacted by Kim and Lisa of Dwell with Dignity and originally asked to guest blog on their site, but they realized I was based here in Atlanta and told me about this satellite project of theirs happening here, and I jumped at the chance to be involved. What a blessing it is to be able to use my passion for DIY and give back to the community and make a difference in a family’s life. I am so thankful to be a part of it. Many of you may not know that before I became a mom, I worked in the nonprofit sector. I was a Wish Coordinator for Children’s Wish Foundation here in Atlanta, and it was my job to coordinate and grant wishes for terminally ill children. I opted to be a stay at home mom when my first son was born, and although I knew it was the right decision, it was hard to leave a job that I loved so much. I’ve always hoped to find a way to get involved with the nonprofit world again, and I’m so happy to be combining my love for nonprofit with my love for DIY.
You may have seen on social media that I was at AmericasMart this week for a meeting. AmericasMart is a huge convention center, and right now the gifts and home furnishings market is going on. You have to have credentials to get in, but I was lucky enough to get a guess pass from Currey and Company since we had our meeting in their showroom. First of all, let me just say, I was completely overwhelmed in the best possible way. It’s like a giant sea of home decor and furnishings and eye candy. When I say a “sea,” I am talking multiple buildings totaling seven million square feet. I almost got dizzy from all the inspiration surrounding me. Oh and by the way, major bummer that no photography is allowed unless you have a press pass. (I probably could’ve gotten a press pass but that didn’t occur to me until it was too late.) Anyway, Kim and Lisa flew in from Dallas for the meeting and we got together with the committees to meet each other and review the design plan and schedule.
I will be helping to lead the DIY committee for this project. The lead designer on the project is Kerry Howard of KMH Interiors, and the other designer is Brian Patrick Flynn of HGTV. The design committee is full of amazing talent and I am so excited to help their vision come to life. I have lots of amazing Atlanta bloggers who have volunteered to be on my DIY committee too, so I’m very appreciative of them as well.
I will be telling you a lot more about this project as we go along. The installation will be at the end of February, and there will be a wrap party at the end that will be open to the public, so if you are in Atlanta I’d love for you to stop by! More info on that coming soon. The ultimate goal is for Dwell with Dignity to open a chapter here in Atlanta so that we can do lots more of these projects in the future.
I hope you’ll stay tuned as I’ll be sharing updates on this makeover as we go along. Be sure to follow along on social media for behind the scenes photos too!
