Guess what? I sewed something! For the first time ever in my life (aside from the awesome pink gym bag I made in 8th grade Home Economics class), I sat down in front of a sewing machine and made something. Now, it was nothing big or spectacular or anything, but sewing is something I can already tell I’m going to enjoy and I can’t wait to make all sorts of fun things. Thank you to Singer Sewing Company for sending me my new sewing machine and making my new hobby possible.
First, let’s talk about the machine. I received the Singer One Sewing Machine, which was the perfect machine for a beginner like myself since it’s so easy to use. I learned to thread the machine by watching the DVD that came with it. I had no lessons whatsoever, just sat down and began to sew. This machine has all sorts of fun bells and whistles: OneTouch stitch selection, 24 built-in stitches (which I’ve been having so much fun playing around with), an automatic needle threader, an extra-large sewing space and more. This particular machine is available at Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores.
I have to admit, for someone like me who has never sewn before, the idea can be intimidating. After I faced my fears and tried the machine out, I realized this is very doable. Although I don’t have sewing experience, I can tell you that if you want to learn how to sew, this is a great machine for that. Even if you’ve been sewing for years, this machine is easy and has lots of fun stitch options. It meets my needs perfectly. I give it two thumbs up, and so does my four year-old son who keeps trying to mess with it when I’m not looking! He’s fascinated by it, but I sat down and explained to him that this is Mommy’s toy.
Ok, ready to see my first ever sewing “experiments”? First let me just warn you that they’re not going to knock your socks off. Cut me some slack, it was my first try! And I should also explain that when I sat down to sew, I had no plans whatsoever as to what I was making. I just wanted to practice stitching, so I stitched around a piece of fabric and when I was finished, I had a pouch. I guess I could add a zipper and make it into a makeup bag or something. I did the same thing again (sewed around some fabric) and decided halfway through to turn it into a small pillow. Keep in mind, I didn’t iron or measure or anything, so please excuse the creases and imperfections.
Here are my impromptu sewing projects:
Well, then my two boys started fighting over the “tiny pillow” (as they called it), so I had to make another one. I decided to make the seam on the inside of this one – still didn’t iron or measure though. Just whipped it up in about two minutes so it is definitely not good quality, but it was fun practice!
If I had known the boys would be so crazy about these “tiny pillows,” I would have used some cute boyish fabric of some sort. Maybe next time. My two year-old actually took a nap with his and has been sleeping with it at night.
So, do you want to hear some really exciting news? One of my lucky readers is going to have a chance to win a Singer One Sewing Machine just like mine! Check back here on Friday for your chance to enter. I know, awesome right?
I already have a huge list of projects in my mind that I can’t wait to start working on. (I just need a little more practice first.) I can’t wait to get started on some very soon. Of course, I’ll be sharing my progress with you!
Do you love to sew? Would you love to win this machine? What sewing projects do you have in mind?
Disclosure: I received this product for free. All opinions are my own.

Nadine @ Chic with the Kool-Aid Mustache says
wOOt for trying new things! I’ve been sewing since I was a little girl and although I don’t sew regularly anymore for myself I do pull out my trust Singer about once a month for one thing or another. Once you get the fever you’ll be looking twice before buying simple things you could make yourself!
Erin Spain says
Thanks Nadine! I’m already getting the fever, so I’m sure I will be trying to make everything myself instead of buying things once I get the hang of it.

If I had a one touch buttonhole doothingy on my machine I’d make nothing but buttonhole projects. My buttonholer is less than cooperative.
Erin Spain says
Haven’t played around with the buttonhole thingy yet but I plan on it very soon!

My mother has attempted to teach me to sew many times and and just doesn’t stick. I want to be able to make cute clothes for my girls (I have four daughters :o)……..and their dolls. Amongst other things but that’s first and foremost on my list. I bought a few patterns at a garage sale and I swear its like reading chinese to me. Someday…….
Erin Spain says
I haven’t attempted a pattern yet but I hope to get to that point eventually. It’s very intimidating!
Sammi says
I was struck by how pretty the machine is! And like everything: practice, practice, practice. May I recommend ‘Sew Everything Workshop’ by Diana Rupp or ‘Stitch by Stitch’ by Deborah Moebes…they are great sewing books for beginners or for those returning to sewing.
Our Country Bungalow says
Congratulations! I sew all of the time and love it! And your machine is so cute!

Hi Erin,
My first sewing machine was a Singer 720 my mother purchased for me in 1976 for the grand tune of £500 which was a lot of money then. This machine is still in operation with all it’s own cams. It came with a box of magic tricks, different cams for the various embroidery stitches and it came with six different feet. This machine has made school summer uniforms, bridesmaids and bride dresses and many other items. It sits now in the cabinet it came with, I treat her gently taking her out at least once year to clean and oil her. I now own a three sewing machines, Janomes the reason why I have three is like different features on each. To all of you carry own sewing.
Regards,
Barbara Harri
