Attempting to Have a Green Thumb + Recent Finds

September 29, 2014 By Erin Spain 1 Comment

Anyone who knows me is aware that I have a major black thumb. Plants and I don’t mix, period. However, I really am trying to change that. I had been admiring fiddle leaf fig trees in interior design magazines, websites, blogs, etc., and loved the look of them, but they were a bit pricey and I knew I would probably kill it anyway. One day, I was strolling through The Home Depot and I saw them priced much more reasonably than I had ever seen before (probably because they needed some TLC). I thought maybe this would be the perfect time to challenge myself and attempt to take care of them.

Here’s the large one we got for our front living room.

We also got a smaller one for the dining room which I haven’t taken pictures of yet. So far, I’ve kept them alive for a couple of months (knock on wood), which is huge for me.

A couple weeks ago I was strolling through The Home Depot again (are you noticing a pattern here? I spend a lot of time there.) and I came across the cutest little succulent plants for just a couple bucks each. I already showed you the aloe plant I picked up for the dining room.

I also picked up this cute little succulent for our bedroom dresser.

I already had the cute little gray pot (dollar store find, I think?), and it works perfectly with the lamp.

The books stacked underneath the plant are mostly journals. I have kept a journal for each of my children since the day they were born. I write things that we do together, their milestones, cute/funny things they say, etc. I was inspired to do this when I found out a few years ago that my grandma had been doing this for me my entire life and I had no idea. She mailed me the journals and I read them and cried my eyes out. What a precious gift.

By the way, if you have a green thumb (or if you’re like me and you’re really trying to), I rounded up a few cute planters I found. Links can be found below.

Do you have a green thumb? (If so, I need some pointers.) And do you keep journals for your kids? I’d love to know!
