When we moved into our new home, one of my goals was to make the playroom a really special place for our boys. I wanted to nurture their creativity and create an environment where their imaginations can run wild. It’s still a work in progress, but I decided that the perfect way to make this space truly “theirs” is to actively involve them by allowing them to create artwork for the space. I purchased some Crayola crayons and washable paint at Walmart and let them go to town, and they helped me create a kid’s art gallery wall.
Walmart has a nice selection of Crayola products, by the way.
My boys love to draw and paint, so this project was right up their alley. My oldest son will literally sit and draw for hours — art is his favorite thing in the whole world.
It was so much fun watching them create, and listening to them explain what was depicted in each drawing.
They took this project very seriously, and stayed very focused. Since these art pieces were going to be displayed on the wall, they wanted to make them extra special.
When I told them that I planned on creating a gallery wall with their creations, their faces lit up and they got so excited. I purchased inexpensive clipboards at Walmart to display their artwork on the wall. This way, the art can easily be changed out periodically as they create new pictures. I attached them with picture hanging strips instead of nails, and I used painter’s tape, a measuring tape, and a level to space them equally and keep them straight. You could also use clothes pins or colorful binder clips instead of clipboards. Here’s a great tutorial for how to hang a clipboard wall too.
I can’t wait to pick up some Crayola Sidewalk Chalk too so they can doodle fun little drawings all over the chalkboard table in their bedroom. (I’ll show you the progress we’re making in their bedroom and the rest of the playroom very soon.) By the way, the paints clean up super easily with soap and water, however I will share Crayola’s disclaimer that their washable paint is not for use as body/face paint.
