After living in our home for a year and avoiding our drinking water as much as possible, I knew that it was time to do something about it. I have been telling my husband for months that our water has a distinct “chemical” taste to it. He didn’t seem to be that bothered by it, but I could hardly drink it. It was especially bad if a glass of water had been sitting out for a while. To me, it tasted like pure chlorine. I knew that this couldn’t be very safe (nor was it tasty – yuck) and I didn’t want my children to drink it. I resorted to purchasing bottled water most of the time, which adds up in not only cost but also waste. Luckily, I was given the opportunity to try the 3M Filtrete Drinking Water System, which has solved our problem.
I enlisted my husband’s help installing it, but installation was straight-forward and didn’t take long. This system comes with a dedicated faucet, so we installed it where our soap dispenser had been. As soon as we tasted the filtered water, my husband and I could both notice a major difference. As he said, “It doesn’t taste like anything now.” Um, that’s what it’s supposed to taste like. Ha! Before, it was like you were drinking a glass of chlorine. Now, all traces of chemicals are gone. It tastes pure and there is no chemical aftertaste, which is obviously what you want when it comes to your drinking water. The system is definitely doing its job. Now I feel comfortable in knowing that our drinking water is safe for our family, plus it tastes good.
Aside from the safety and taste benefits to our new filtered water, we will also save a lot of money now that we don’t have to constantly purchase bottled water. We just have to replace the filter every 6 months or so, and we’ll always have fresh, pure water to drink. The filter is very easy to replace – you just give it a quarter turn to remove it and then easily insert the new one. Overall, I am very happy with it and I can truly taste the difference.
According to the 3M site, this filtration system removes VOCs including Atrazine (an herbicide), Toxaphene (a pesticide), lead, select pharmaceuticals, Cryptosporidium and Giardia cysts, sediment, rust and dirt. Isn’t it scary to think that those things could be lurking in your drinking water? Yuck.

Do you use a filtration system for your drinking water, or do you purchase bottled water? Or both?
