Dollar Store Bucket Redo

April 22, 2012 By Erin Spain 11 Comments

I’ve been planning on getting some cute buckets to replace the wicker baskets on the bookcase in my kiddos’ room. Over the weekend, I took a trip to the dollar store to see what I could find. I didn’t find the right size buckets I needed for their room, but I did find some cute smaller ones in a variety of bright colors. I decided to give one of them a fun “makeover.”

Here is the red dollar store bucket BEFORE (see below). Cute, but plain. (It actually ended up looking very coral-colored after the makeover. Perfect for spring!)

Before

Here’s what I did:

First, I taped off the whole outside of the bucket, except for the top and bottom rim. I primed and spray painted the inside, rims and handles gold.

Next, I spray painted 4 small drawer pulls gold also, and hot glued them to the bottom as “feet.” I then used tiny cut-up pieces of the painter’s tape that had been painted gold during the bucket-painting, and stuck them around the bucket in a dotted line pattern. It’s not intended to be perfect – I was just playing around with a design. It will probably change. The great thing is, since it’s tape I can change it as often as I’d like!

This would go great as a coral accent to my turquoise room. I haven’t decided for sure yet where I will put it.

Not bad for a dollar! (Plus paint and drawer pulls.) It probably cost about $5.00 total.
