When I was a little girl, my sister and I would spend many weekends at our dad’s house across town. One of the things I often packed in my little purple suitcase was my pair of roller-skates. “Why?,” you might ask. Oh, that’s because we enjoyed rollerskating on the marble floor in the foyer. Inside the house. Yes, you read that correctly. Isn’t that horrifying? My dad was a bachelor and apparently didn’t mind such ridiculousness. He eventually remarried and that kind of behavior was no longer permitted. I mean, what were we thinking? Anyway, whenever I think of marble, that’s what I’m reminded of — childhood memories of etching the shine off of a beautiful floor with my skates. I love the look of marble in interior design. I would have marble countertops in a heartbeat if they were more durable and didn’t cost a bajillion dollars. My grandmother gave me her old marble slab and rolling pin, so for now those will have to suffice.
Evidently I’m not the only one who loves marble — you see it all over the place nowadays in the form of beautiful Carrara marble countertops, subway tile backsplashes and hexagon tile bathroom floors. If you’re going for the look but don’t want to spend big bucks, the trend has crossed over into home accessories as well. I’ve seen the use of paint and marble patterned paper to DIY this look too.
Here are some examples of decor inspired by marble which will allow you to get the look with a modern twist, often along with a dose of color, on a smaller scale and at a reasonable price point.
1. Marbled Bunting / 2. Malachite Marble Coasters / 3. Lamp / 4. Pillow / 5. Tray
And for the record, my children will not be rollerskating in the house anytime soon.
