Keeping Heirlooms Alive With DIY {+ True Value Hardware Giveaway!}

Keeping Heirlooms Alive with DIY

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by True Value Hardware. All opinions are my own.

I’ve mentioned so many times on this blog that I am a sentimental person, and that definitely carries over into my decorating (and may or may not play a part in my tendency to be a hoarder). I love filling my home with things that have a special meaning to our family. I also love to breathe new life into “old” things through DIY. When I was asked by True Value Hardware to tell you about my own personal experience with keeping heirlooms alive through DIY, it was a no brainer. This is a subject I love, and I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it too (and give you a chance to win a $50 gift card at the end of this post!).

Once upon a time these cabinets in our office used to belong to my parents. They changed hands a couple times throughout my childhood, and finally ended up in my home. When I got them, they had a botched, peeling paint job. It was obvious that they needed a serious makeover, but I had never refinished a single piece of furniture in my life. I guess you could say this project got the ball rolling and led me down this “DIY” road.

Inside the cabinets, I keep a little glass jar which holds a few pieces of costume jewelry that I inherited from my great-grandmother. You’ll also find some antique spice containers that my grandmother gave me. I know that they’re all just “things,” but they have meaning because of the memories attached to them and the people who gave them to me.

I was also happy to give this chest of drawers a new life several years ago.

Chest-of-drawers

It was a hand-me-down to my husband and it belonged to his great-grandmother. When we got married, it was in pretty rough condition but I loved the story behind it and the shape and size. I could see that it had great potential. It was the second piece of furniture I ever painted, and it found a home in my son’s nursery.

I would love for you to check out this video from True Value Hardware that talks about the value of keeping heirlooms in the family. (It will tug at your heart strings!)
