I’ve been promising to post progress photos of our master bedroom makeover for a million years. I had planned on waiting until I finished a couple of projects, but since I haven’t gotten to them as quickly as I thought I would, I’m going to go ahead and share our room with you “as is”. Due to some upcoming major life changes, the rest of this room makeover is being put on hold.
First, let’s take a look at some “before” photos.
And here’s the sitting area “before.”
I’ve shared photos of the sitting area with you before, but now I will show you a more updated version, plus the rest of the room.
Here it is NOW:
I reupholstered the Craigslist chairs and refinished the dresser I’ve had since high school. (My beginner’s guide to furniture painting tutorial can be found here.)
I also made over an old lamp, and added a new octagon mirror from HomeGoods.
I am in love with our sheets that I got from West Elm over the summer, and I made a few throw pillows for the bed. The chevron tray was a One Kings Lane find from last year, and the sunburst mirror is from Hobby Lobby. Eventually I plan on building new bedside tables.
I painted our armoire to match the dresser over on the other side of the room, and I’ve had the jewelry stand since I was 12 or 13 years old.
The artwork in the frame is actually gift wrap from the Target dollar spot.
Until I laid out my jewelry to take photos, I didn’t realize the full extent of my obsession with turquoise costume jewelry. Love it. Also, the silver tray was a dollar store find.
Β
I stuck some pretty white tulips in one of my milk glass pieces, and brought my vintage camera up from downstairs.
I stole some items from the dining room and office too, like the antlers and white handled vase full of branches.
That box on top of the armoire is actually my husband’s. He found it at the Canton Street Antique Market in Roswell, GA, a couple years ago.
That little table in the sitting area came from Target. I purchased it with birthday gift cards a few months ago.
This is where I do all of my blogging. The black desk came from Crate & Barrel many years ago, the artwork was a clearance Target find several years ago, and the chair was a freebie and is the most uncomfortable thing I’ve ever sat on. After using it for a while now and saying “I hate this chair!” pretty much every day, I have decided that I will be replacing it at some point soon. It’s falling apart anyway. It’s served its purpose for quite some time though. Oh, and the little desk lamp with the Edison bulb came from Target.
I added some ribbon trim to the lamp on the dresser and made the easy monogram art in the little frame.
After making over our sons’ bedroom, I was really inspired by navy blue. I just think it’s really classic and pretty, so I decided to go with it for our room too.
And once again, look who just couldn’t stay away while I took photos.
Have you made over any rooms in your home lately? I’d love to hear about it!

Hi Erin! I cannot believe your room is not in the “complete” stage! It sure looks perfect to me! I love it. Great job!
Erin @ DIY on the Cheap says
Thanks so much Tracy! I really want to build new bedside tables and add some artwork, and a new desk chair. I guess it’s close to complete, just not quite there. But then again I guess I never feel like any room is “complete”! I’m always changing something. I just tried to show the “complete” parts (as opposed to the rickety old bedside table on my husband’s side.) π

Christina @ The Frugal Homemaker says
That white dresser looks sooo different – love it! and love the mirror too.
Your room is looking so pretty! I have GOT to get to work on our master bedroom too – it is the most neglected room in the house – so sad! π And it is nice and big like yours too – no separate seating area but big enough that I may be able to arrange things to make it have a seating area. As soon as it gets warm, furniture in the garage is calling my name to come paint it π
Erin @ DIY on the Cheap says
Thank you, Christina! I was so close to getting rid of the dresser and now I’m so glad I didn’t. Can’t wait to see your master bedroom when you finish it! I know it will be beautiful!

Hi Erin! Love the make-over. Your headboard might be old – is it a DIY or a find? Thanks!
Erin @ DIY on the Cheap says
Thanks Aimee! Yes, the headboard is old — it came from Target several years ago. Not sure if they still have it in stock. I can’t remember the name of it but I think the color is called “Oatmeal.”
Dorothy Stanford says
Hello Erin!
I’ll be honest – I loved the design! Rustic and at the same time contemporary and new. I have to say, you do have a knack for those things π
Cheers!
