We are prepping for a whirlwind boys’ bedroom transformation over here, and things are moving along. I mentioned the other day that we came away with quite a haul from IKEA. Just to bring you up to speed, we are turning our 2 year-old son’s “baby room” into a shared “big boy room” for both of my boys. We’re transitioning my youngest from his crib to a toddler bed, and my oldest (4 years old) from the toddler bed to a twin bed. We are also totally redecorating. (On a budget, of course.)
We are going with a navy/lime color scheme. Here is my inspiration for the furniture via The Yellow Caped Cod. I love the pop of color they created by painting the furniture a bright lime green, but glazing it to tone it down. I found this night stand on Craigslist which will be given the same (or a similar) treatment.
And this lamp was an $8 Goodwill find. It’s going to get a coat or two of navy spray paint and a snazzy new shade.
I also scored this mid-century modern chair at a thrift store, and it will be re-covered in order to serve as a replacement for their baby rocking chair. (My husband loves this new chair and is totally jealous.) I’ve decided not to do anything to permanently change it – I’ll just cover it with new fabric which can easily be changed later. It will be a sweet little spot in the corner where they can look at their books. And bonus, it takes up much less space than their plush rocker and ottoman. (P.S. Please ignore the hoarding situation happening in my garage.)
I found a dresser on Craigslist that my husband is planning on picking up this week, so I’m crossing my fingers that it works out! I love the chest of drawers that is currently in their room, but the drawers are really hard to open and the boys can’t reach all of them. It will be relocated to the guest room and replaced with a dresser that allows them to reach all of their clothes.
And just to refresh your memory, here’s a “Before” photo of the room:
I have lots of other “DIY” things I’m working on for this room, so stay tuned! This makeover will probably dominate the blog for a little while since I’ll be sharing my progress as I go along. I also have something really fun and exciting to share with you next week.
By the way, I just (finally) gave in and joined Instagram, so feel free to follow along over there as I post random photos and behind the scenes stuff.

I have a question to ask—-my mother would be mortified b/c she always raised us to never ask how much anything costs! But since the name of your blog is DIY ON THE CHEAP, I figure you must be somewhat like me–all about getting a good deal! When I lived in an affluent northern suburb of Atlanta, we were surrounded by people w/more money than sense, and all the Goodwills, Salvation Armys, & numerous thrift stores & flea markets were abounding with high-quality ditched furniture b/c so many people would completely re-do rooms on a frequent basis. But anyhooo, I moved up north to a smallish town, & almost any used furniture either looks like it came with a doublewide 40 years ago and has been completely used up, or they want hundreds of dollars for small pieces like an end table or night stand that was inexpensive when it was new. I just need to get a reality check of what is a reasonable price to pay for used furniture. So, I am being rude, but do you mind telling me what you paid for the nightstand? And what would you pay for a tall dresser of similar style? THANK YOU!

Oh I TOTALLY don’t mind talking price. I have no shame about that sort of thing! Ha. We paid $20 for this night stand (negotiated down from a $30 listing price). It’s heavy, solid wood and well worth the price. For a taller one like this, I’d say anything from $50-80 is reasonable depending on the condition, but I’ve seen them listed much higher. It’s hard to pinpoint a value because these types of pieces are listed in such a wide price range – but that’s just my personal opinion. Vintage furniture is worth a lot because it is solid wood construction which is hard to find in contemporary furniture, but you still have to consider how much time/work you’re going to have to invest in it and then decide what it’s worth to you. Hope this helps!
