I was recently given the opportunity to try FrogTape® Shape Tape™, and I am so excited to tell you all about it! I decided to build and paint a DIY chevron planter for our front porch. (Tutorial for the actual build here.) Today I’m talking all about the paint treatment and how I achieved this look. You don’t have to build the planter from scratch – any wooden planter will do. FrogTape® Shape Tape™ comes in three pre-cut patterns: Wave, Scallop and Chevron. I chose the Chevron, and decided I wanted to customize my planter for fall to show off some pretty yellow mums.
I started out with just a basic wooden planter.
First, I primed it and then painted it white. I recommend using exterior latex paint, although I used interior to save money since I had it on-hand and this planter will live on a covered porch.
I decided to make my chevron stripes equal in size, although you can customize the look by staggering placement or varying the widths of the tape.
I didn’t measure – just eyeballed it, but if you want the stripes to be precise, you can measure the spacing. There is a slit liner on the back of the tape for easy application. You just remove one half of the liner, apply the tape, and then remove the other half of the liner smoothing down the tape as you go. I recommend using a plastic card or tool to smooth down the edges and seal them down.
I opted for a black and white look to go with my black, white and gold fall theme on the porch. After my tape was applied, I painted a coat of black. I planned on using a roller but it was easy enough with just a brush. Remove the tape carefully as soon as you’re done painting.
Here she is all finished!
I love this tape. It’s so easy to work with, and the thing that makes it work so well is that it is treated with patented PaintBlock® technology. This is a super absorbent polymer that reacts with the water in the latex paint and instantly gels to form a micro-barrier, sealing the edges of the tape. This prevents bleeds and ensures that you get nice, crisp lines. Shape Tape™ is available at participating Lowes and Walmart locations, and all Menards stores across the United States.
