I recently had the opportunity to appear on Good Day Atlanta on Fox 5 here locally, where I presented a few fun DIY Mother’s Day gift ideas. These DIY painted and gold leaf succulent pots were one of the things I shared, and today I’ll show you exactly how I made them. (This post contains affiliate links.)

How to Make DIY Painted & Gold Leaf Succulent Pots
Step 1
First, paint your terra cotta pots in whatever color you choose. I used FolkArt Multi-Surface paint in “Dove Gray” and “Titanium White”. Apply two coats, allowing them to dry in between.
Step 2
Then, after your paint has dried, tape off your design with painter’s tape. For one of my pots, I taped a diagonal design, and for the other, I just taped below the rim of the pot.
Step 3
Next, apply gilding adhesive to the portion of your pot where you want to adhere the gold leaf. Allow it to sit for 15-20 minutes until it feels tacky to the touch. Not too wet, not too dry.
Step 4
Then, attach the gold leaf sheets to the area of the pot where you applied the gilding adhesive. You can apply it in patches, overlapping as you go.
Step 5
Using circular motions with a dry brush, flake off any excess gold leaf. If you have any spots where the gold leaf did not adhere, you can go back in with the gilding adhesive and repeat step 4 until you achieve the amount of coverage you want. Peel off your tape. Allow to dry for about an hour.
Step 6
Add potting soil and your succulent, and you’re good to go!
Since I am a member of the Plaid Creators team, I get to try out tons of amazing Plaid products, and these gilding sheets are one of my favorite products ever.
These cute little succulent pots would make a great gift, whether for Mother’s Day, Christmas, a birthday, a teacher gift, etc. Plus, there are so many fun ways to customize them! Also, I’m equally in love with Plaid Liquid Leaf if you want a similar gold leaf look without using the gilding sheets.
