The first week we moved into our home 5 years ago, we had to call the fire department. I was in the kitchen and I started to smell an electrical burning smell, and around that time the smoke alarms started going off. I didn’t know whether there was a fire starting or what was happening, so we evacuated the house and called 911. Within minutes we had a whole crew of firemen running around our house looking for the source of the smell, and ironically it turned out to be one of the ancient smoke alarms that were wired into the walls. The wires had started to burn and had they not removed it when they did, it would have started a fire. We immediately switched to battery powered smoke alarms, but you know what’s annoying? That chirp that happens whenever the batteries are low, and it inevitably happens at an inopportune time, like when your kids are sleeping. I found the solution to that!

You’ve probably heard the saying, “Change your clock, change your batteries,” recommending that you swap out your smoke alarm batteries every time you have to change your clock for Daylight Saving Time. It’s an easy way to remember to do it, but what if you didn’t have to? I recently installed 10-year battery smoke alarms from Kidde, and now I’m good to go for the next decade. At that point, I’ll just swap them out with new ones and dispose of these. So instead of changing your clock and changing your batteries, think, “Time For a Change,” once a decade. With children in the house, I definitely want the peace of mind of knowing that our smoke alarms are working and don’t need a battery change anytime soon. (Plus no more annoying chirp sounds!) We have 3 of these 10-year battery smoke alarms installed throughout our home.
These are super easy to install. All you need is a drill, hammer (to install the anchors), and a screwdriver.
The unit is automatically activated when you attach it to the bracket. It runs on a sealed-in lithium power supply, so you will never have to change the batteries.
Now there will be no more smoke alarm battery changes at the Spain house, and I will definitely not miss those random middle of the night low battery smoke alarm chirps!
