If you’ve followed me on Instagram for any amount of time then you know that our journey to having an organized garage has been quite an uphill battle. It’s always been the bane of my existence really. I’m not the most organized person in general, but the garage has always been especially difficult to keep tidy. I’ll be honest, for years it looked like an episode of Hoarders, and I’m hardly exaggerating. But that has changed, and we are on the road to hoarding recovery! I’ve been slowly organizing everything, and filming for my soon to launch YouTube channel has definitely lit a fire under me to get things tidy fast. Today I’ll show you a before and after of one of the worst sections of our garage. It’s the wall with the entrance into our house. Brace yourselves.

Here’s what it looked like before. (I can’t believe I’m showing you this. So embarrassing!):
I warned you it was bad. I headed to Home Depot and picked up one of those Rubbermaid FastTrack racks with the mix and match hooks.
I was able to install it quickly all by myself, and my new DeWalt 3/4 inch stud finder came in so handy for this!
I love that the center find technology always finds the center of the stud as opposed to the edges like most stud finders. There’s a little circle in the middle which makes it simple to know where to mark the stud. It also has continuous auto calibration and AC live wire detection, which is great for ensuring that you don’t accidentally drill into any electrical wires.
I’ll also be using this stud finder when I hang some DIY floating shelves in our playroom that I’m making over. Stay tuned for that soon!
Are you ready to see what this side of our garage looks like now? SUCH an improvement!
I’m still in the process of organizing and deciding what to hang here, but here’s where we’re at so far. Kids’ baseball stuff, brooms, and stroller. I’m sure we will add more hooks soon too.
Sure the floor needs cleaned and the walls need to be painted but let’s just focus on this small victory for now. Baby steps!
I won’t traumatize you by showing you the other side of the garage. Like I said, it’s a process and we are slowly getting there, but we’re not there yet! The next thing I need to address is lumber storage. When I launch my YouTube channel next month, you’ll see in my outtakes why this needs to be done ASAP. (There will be outtakes at the end of every video.) Just to give you an idea, it basically looks like a giant heap of wood at the moment.
If you watch my Instagram stories, then you have seen (or will regularly see) that I did at least organize the back of the garage with shelving units and plastic tote bins with all of my tools, accessories, and craft supplies. That was a huge undertaking and I’m so relieved to have that done since it was probably the biggest task of the entire garage organization process. Now it’s just the sides that need to be tackled. (Well, only one side now!)

What a amazing article. thanks a lot for sharing this.
Thanks!
Thank you for sharing so openly. The reality is that we all have areas in our homes that require attention, some areas more than others. Some Vloggers show you their “mess,” which is obviously staged. I am just joining your world and am loving it. I can’t wait to see how your garage turns out when I view your video on YouTube. I’ve already subscribed to your channel as well as your email newsletters.
I recently started woodworking on the side as a hobby. My 11 year old daughter is aspiring to be a construction worker. I love that women like yourself, as well as April Wilkerson, and the Shanty 2 Chic sisters among others, can be an inspiration to her to roll up her sleeves and create items with her bare hands. I love it that she wants to join me when I work on a lumber project.
Thank you again for being you and sharing your knowledge and resources with all of us.
Thank you so much! And that is awesome that your daughter wants to be a construction worker. I love that she is interested in building. I appreciate your nice message!
