It’s funny how sometimes all a room (or shelf) needs is a little tweaking and rearranging to make it feel fresh and new. I decided to do a little rearranging of our built-in bookshelves in the family room recently. I added a couple of things, subtracted a few, and moved a few. It’s not drastically different or anything – in fact you may have to squint hard to spy the differences if you’re just glancing at the photos – but it was enough of a “switcharoo” to make things feel a little bit more fresh and balanced to me.
Here’s a little peek at the room and shelves “Before”:
And here they are “After”:
Here’s a numbered photo with source info (listed below) and descriptions of the little trinkets and “do-dads” found on the shelves. By the way, I plan on adding something to the backing of the bookshelves at some point. Maybe colored/patterned paper or fabric of some sort. Not sure yet. I also plan on making more pillows for the chairs to tie them together better since they are mismatched.
1. Silver hammered vase: Walmart.
2. Round silver mirror: a clearance find from Hobby Lobby.
3. Cute white pitcher: Michaels.
4. Little brown box: I got this years ago (sometime during college) at Hobby Lobby. My boys hide little toys and treasures in it now.
5. One of my favorite thing(s) are these silver buckets – a Target dollar spot find! I filled them with DIY moss balls, an idea that I found via The Yellow Cape Cod. (see close-up photo below)
6. Vintage camera: a birthday gift from my husband which I blogged about here.
7. (Same as #5)
8. Turquoise jar: Michaels.
9. Turquoise pitcher: Home Goods (I think?) and the cute turquoise birds are from Michaels.

I also moved the brown leather chair in the top photos into a position that makes more sense. (You’ll see what I mean if you compare the first and second photos above.) We had that chair in this room before we moved the other brown mismatched chair in, so they just sort of stayed in a haphazard position until we realized it would make a lot more sense to center them in front of the fireplace. It’s funny how just moving something over a foot or two can make a difference.
I have dreams of white slipcovers but with small tornadoes children in the house, that will probably stay a dream for a while.
Oh, and here’s my project manager, checking in. Hi, Indy. As you can see, she’s healing nicely since the “cone of shame” situation is now several months behind her.
Have you done any rearranging lately? Do you have a pet who thinks he/she is your project manager?

Totally know what you mean, we get the urge to rearrange all the time, just to keep things fresh and brighten up the room a bit!
Thanks Jane – it’s amazing how a little rearranging can make things feel new!
I rearrange all the time. Sometimes small accessories, sometimes total rooms. Love your fireplace wall!
Thank you Laurie!
Hi, Erin
I love the change up you did. Love the accessories you have displayed on the shelves. Lovely. Have a great week.
Vanessa
Thank you Vanessa!
Loving the pops of color in there, too, Erin!

Thanks Heidi! Hope you had a great weekend!
Yes and yes – Bear and Hank are my project managers. If you look at the post about my son’s room, you can see Hank lying on the curtains before I had a chance to hang them up!
How cute!! I’ll have to check out that post. Indy would totally do the same thing – she loves laying on anything soft.
I do think the previous commentators are in all probability suitable, That’s tremendous, always keep them right up i’m checking intended for all your subsequent blogging site! Mali gold
I’m long overdue for rearranging. I love putting a different spin on what I already have instead of buying new things.
