I don’t drink coffee. So naturally, I’m creating a coffee bar in my home. Makes sense, right? The thing is, we have this 80’s wet bar room connected to our family room, and since we moved into our home we’ve just used it for storage. In fact, we just hoard things in there, tossing things haphazardly inside and slamming the door, never actually entering the small room. It’s a waste of space which could definitely be put to better use. While I don’t drink coffee (with the exception of an occasional decaf pumpkin spice latte), my husband drinks enough for the both of us. He is a self-professed coffee snob, and he even roasts his own beans in a very unusual way (we shared his technique here a while back). Ultimately, we decided that a coffee bar would be a fun use of the wet bar space, plus it would give him a dedicated area to prepare his fancy shmancy pour overs and store all of his coffee-related paraphernalia. While this space is quite small for a One Room Challenge makeover, I plan on giving it a major transformation (on a budget) and the ORC is the perfect motivation for me to finally get it done once and for all. (By the way, you can check out my last One Room Challenge makeover here.)
If you’re not familiar with the One Room Challenge, it’s a fun challenge hosted by Calling it Home, and many bloggers and designers participate. We each have 6 weeks to make over a space in our home, and we will be sharing our progress each week as we go along.
Brace yourselves, because here’s what we’ve been dealing with. (I can’t believe I’m showing you this picture.)
And here it is cleared out. (Don’t mind the random cot and the dust everywhere.) Also, I realize these photos are horrible, but the space is currently horrible so I didn’t try too hard to capture good shots.
The room is very small, but there is a sink and counter already in the space. We will be replacing the sink and faucet, painting the cabinet, possibly tiling the wall behind the sink, replacing the light, painting the walls, adding shelving, a rug, decor, swapping out hardware, and more.
Here’s a very basic moodboard with some of the general elements we are hoping to incorporate.

Stay tuned! I’ll be sharing sources as I go along too.
Tell me, what would your coffee bar “must haves” be?

I lived in an apartment with a space like this once…they called it a “baker’s pantry”…we called it “storage.” LOL. Can’t wait to see the transformation!
Erin Spain says
Haha! Ours has always been storage too, as you can see. LOL It was very scary until now. Thanks for stopping by!

Yay! I’m doing a coffee bar/station too… only I actually do drink coffee. I had to laugh… in your first before picture I didn’t realize there was a sink in the space and once I saw the space cleared out I had to scroll back up to make sure it was really there 🙂 Excited to see this space progress.
Erin Spain says
Awesome! And haha, yes, there’s a sink! You mean you couldn’t see it through all of my hoarded clutter? LOL!
Lynn Spencer says
What a great use for this little space! And I love rug you are looking at for the room…just classic. I’ll be popping in to see the progress
have a great weekend (thinking a little coffee room is in your plans)

You’re making me a little sad that my 80’s colonial didn’t come with a wet bar (or a back staircase; that’s the one I really feel cheated not getting)! Can’t wait to see it come together 🙂
Erin Spain says
Haha, thanks Gretchen! If you feel sad about the wet bar just picture how horrifying we let ours get over the past 2 years, filling it from floor to ceiling with hoarded junk! And as for the extra staircase, it’s just another opportunity for the kids to fall and hurt themselves! LOL.

A space like this in our home would become hap-hazard storage, too! I love the idea of a coffee bar – can’t wait to see what you do!
Corinna - ADesignerAtHome says
That is an odd space. I love your plan for it though! I can’t imagine I’d have any idea what to do with it. Can’t wait to see the space bloom into beauty!
Erin Spain says
Thanks, Corinna! It’s definitely odd. Which is why we just started shoving stuff in there and slamming the door, and here we are almost 3 years later finally addressing the issue! Haha.
