DIY Halloween Garland

October 23, 2014 By Erin Spain 5 Comments

DIY Halloween Garland Tutorial

In the midst of cramming in as many projects as possible before baby arrives, I took a little break from the “big stuff” to work on a little craft project. Sometimes those are my favorites anyway. I decided to make a cute little DIY Halloween Garland using my Sizzix Big Shot machine. (I also used my Sizzix to make our crib mobile for the nursery which I showed you recently.) I can’t get enough of this machine! There are so many fun things you can make with it, and so many cute die cartridges to choose from.

Sizzix Big Shot

Here are the supplies I used for this project:

  • Sizzix Big Shot
  • Set of Sizzix cutting pads
  • “Rickety House” Sizzix Bigz Die
  • “Branch Tree” Sizzix Bigz Die
  • “Pumpkin, Short w/ Stem” Sizzix Bigz Die
  • Glitter Cardstock (brown and orange)
  • Black Cardstock
  • Scotch Tape
  • Jute Twine
  • Glue Stick

The Sizzix is super easy to use. You just place your cutting material (paper, card stock, fabric, whatever) on top of your die cartridge, then sandwich it between two cutting pads and crank it through the Sizzix machine.

I decided to make the houses brown, the spooky little trees black, and the pumpkins orange (of course) with a brown stem. After I cut out my shapes, I used a glue stick to adhere the stems to the pumpkins.

Use the Sizzix Big Shot to create cute Halloween decor!

I also used my glue stick to adhere the trees to the front of the house. I alternated which side of the house the tree was situated in front of.

Next, I used a small piece of Scotch tape to attach the jute twine to the back of each shape, creating the garland. (Hot glue would work fine too.)

I decided to hang the garland across the chalkboard in our dining room.

I erased the chalkboard first to create a plain, dark, “spooky” backdrop for the garland. You could always draw and cut out your shapes the old fashioned way and make cute garland like this, but the Sizzix just makes these types of projects so easy!

Are you creating any fun Halloween decor this year? Leave a comment and let me know!

I adore this Halloween garland, Erin! I need you to give me some Sissix lessons- love the way you have it draped across the chalkboard, too. Great Fall decor 🙂
