Gray & Gold Gender Neutral Nursery Reveal

November 19, 2014 By Erin Spain 43 Comments

Warning: This post is VERY photo-heavy! The nursery is finally finished and I am so excited to show it to you! I went with a gray & gold gender neutral nursery, and after the baby is born and we know the gender, then we can tweak things or add another accent color if we want. I’ll let you check out the photos, and I’ll add source info throughout the post. I’ll link to sources when able, and if I can’t find the specific product online then I’ll just let you know where I found it.  (I made all the art on the walls and there will be tutorials and more info on that to come.)

The rhino on the dresser came from the dollar store and we spray painted it, and then I colored the horns with a metallic gold Sharpie.

Arrow closet handles: Hobby Lobby

I opted to layer frames in order to beef up the size of this artwork. I had an old thrift store frame in storage in the basement and painted it with metallic gold craft paint. I made the little pennant banner out of gray felt and gold glitter cardstock. I’ll also share an easy tutorial soon for the glitter deer silhouette art.

I painted the animal artwork and designed the printables (printables coming soon).

The vintage wagon came from my great-grandfather. He owned a car dealership and he used to give these wagons away when people purchased a car. I have no idea why he gave away wagons, but I’m happy to have one!

The cute elephant crib sheet is from Target.

Just to refresh your memory, here is the initial mood board I designed before I started the room. It’s interesting to see how things evolved from this little “vision.” Here’s what the room looked like before when it was our guest bedroom.

Here’s a list of all of the DIY projects in the room. (Some of these will be updated with links as I add tutorials):

  • Curtains
  • Elephant String Art
  • Deer Art
  • Mini Pennant Banner
  • Handpainted Animal Art
  • Framed Printables
  • Dollar Store Rhino
  • Crib Mobile
  • Painted Walls
  • Added ribbon trim to lamp shades (here’s the method I used.)

UPDATE: It’s a boy! Baby Jonah arrived on November 25.

Such a great space–it really came together beautifully! Love the little wagon and the family history with it….I would definitely be more likely to buy a car from the dealership that gave me a wagon 😉

Thank you! The crib is from Babies R Us and was purchased before our oldest son was born, almost 7 years ago. Not sure if they still have a similar model. The brand is Carter’s.

Beautiful room and congrats on the birth of your son! Wanted to ask your opinion on the rug–does it shed? Has it held up well? Is it soft, i.e. do you think it will be soft enough for him once he’s crawling? Thanks so much!

Thanks Kim! The rug hasn’t shed much at all, and so far it is holding up great. I think it’s soft enough — not fluffy soft, but soft underfoot and I think it’ll be fine for him to crawl on. It’s not overly plush (which I like for vacuuming purposes) but it is soft. Hope this is helpful!

Such a cute gender-neutral room! I would love to use some of these ideas for our own surprise gender baby in the near future — Do you have the DIY tutorial for the string-art elephant? I love it! Also wondering if you have printables for the animal drawings! Seriously adorable!

Love this nursery! If you don’t mind me asking is your IKEA Hemnes dresser the “white” or “white stain”? I am wanting this dresser desperately. But cannot decide on the finish!!

Awesome. Thank you so much. I do not have an ikea any where near me in New Orleans. I really keep reading different reviews about the white vs white stain and I just cannot decide. I just have a plain white Jenny Lind crib. Would you think the white would work? Also I have read that the white is somewhat shiny? Sorry soo many questions : )

I’m assuming the white stain means you can see the wood grain through the finish, whereas the plain “white” is more opaque since it’s painted. Mine is what I would call a semi-gloss finish, which I like. I use semi-gloss whenever I paint furniture because I like the look but also it’s easier to wipe clean. I think the white is maybe a bit more modern and I’m guessing the white stain would fit more in a shabby chic/rustic type style room? Either would look great with a Jenny Lind crib!
