My husband is a hard person to buy gifts for, so this year as an early Christmas present I decided to surprise him with a date night with the help of Groupon. This was our last opportunity to go on a date before our baby would be born, and since we had family in town to help with our other kids, I thought this would be the perfect gift. My husband and I both love Japanese food, and he has always talked about learning how to make his own sushi and stir-fry and different Japanese dishes. I found a Groupon deal for a local Japanese restaurant, but I didn’t just want to give him the Groupon voucher all by itself. I wanted to package it up and present this gift in a unique way, so I found some cute Japanese bowls, a wooden cutting board, and some chop sticks and presented it with an envelope containing the voucher.
I had originally planned to save this date for soon after the baby was born since we would have family in town to help watch the kids, but when my due date rolled around and there was still no baby (our other two kids were a few days early), we decided to go ahead and head out on our date with the hopes that some spicy Japanese food might inspire this kiddo to be born sooner rather than later.
We went to dinner at a place called Kickshaw Japanese Style Tavern.
The groupon deal was for dinner for 2, and included two small plates, an entree and dessert. This is a new restaurant so I didn’t know much about it, but it was so good! We decided to order calamari, some chili prawns (for my spicy food fix), salmon and a yummy chocolate lava cake dessert.
The food was presented beautifully and it was delicious. It was so nice to have a kid-free evening at a “grown up” restaurant, especially knowing that with baby coming soon we wouldn’t have many chances for nice date nights for a while.
After our beautiful evening out, we went home and went to sleep, and a few hours later it was time to head to the hospital! I guess the spicy food did the trick.
The next morning, we welcomed our sweet baby boy, Jonah. Our Groupon date definitely ended up being one we will never forget, and it will be a part of our son’s birth story forever!
