I’m excited to share this modern dining room makeover with you today! I teamed up with Mohawk Home for this room makeover, and I’ll share the details on the new rug below. First, let’s talk about what our dining room used to look like. This was the OG dining room when we first moved in several years ago.
Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Mohawk Home. I received Mohawk products free of charge to facilitate my review. All opinions are my own.
Then it evolved over time into this …
And then later, this, which wasn’t bad but just wasn’t my style anymore.
I wanted to modernize the space a bit, so that’s what I’m sharing with you today.
This room had become Lego central in our house. I have 3 little boys and they are lego obsessed so this somehow became the spot where they did all of their building. So the first step was to manage that situation and relocate the lego construction site to the playroom.
I removed all of the photos and artwork from the walls and prepped for painting by patching over nail holes with spackle and then sanding it smooth when it dried.
I actually like the existing paint color in here which is Benjamin Moore’s Nocturnal Gray, it’s sort of a deep blue green gray, but I had a different vision for the space so I painted over it with Behr Marquee color matched to Benjamin Moore Nightfall. It’s sort of a deep blue black charcoal combo.
After the room had been painted, it was time to move the table so I could swap out the rug.
Next we swapped out the light fixture with a mid century sputnik style chandelier.
I did have help swapping this out as it is very difficult to do without a second pair of hands. If this isn’t something you’re comfortable tackling on your own when you make over a space, then definitely hire an electrician to take care of it for you. It is an easy thing to DIY though.
After the new light was installed I assembled the new chairs I bought. These were super budget friendly.
I built the dining table and benches and you can find that tutorial here. For now I’m replacing the benches with chairs but we always have the option to swap it out again later on. I did have a cute little helper who assisted me with putting the chairs together.
Since I was doing this all on a budget I decided to make my own art. I built a large canvas out of 1×2 boards and a drop cloth and then made some abstract art.
I already shared a video and blog tutorial on this process, and I used the exact same technique but altered the dimensions a bit and added a brown accent color as a middle layer. I hung it using a wall anchor and screw.
I ordered a mirror for the space and hung that above the buffet table, a pair of lamps, as well as a pair of plug in wall sconces which I hung on each side of the abstract art.
I have another piece of art coming for the wall opposite the mirror and I will share that on Instagram when it arrives.
I am so happy to have this room done! It feels so much fresher and more my style. You can find all of the sources for the room here.
Ok let’s talk about this rug from Mohawk Home. It’s cream with a diamond design and I love it! It is probably one of the softest rugs I’ve ever owned, and I love the simple pattern and neutral color scheme.
It’s super versatile too and could complement a variety of styles. It fits in great in this modern space but could also work fine in a more traditional setting.
I recently built that buffet table and it’s painted the same color as the walls, and you can find the blog post for that here and the video here.

The wall sconces look terrible with the cords hanging down. What designer does that?
They are plug in sconces, not hard wired. I had planned on getting some cord hiding tubing but couldn’t find any that worked with the molding, and then I moved to a new house. For future reference, I’m all for constructive criticism but blatantly rude comments are not welcome here.
