#SwapItLikeItsHot: Thrift Store Transformations

October 5, 2015 By Erin Spain 40 Comments

Get ready to be inspired! Do you like thrift store transformations? I hope so, because I’ve teamed up with a total of 40 (!!!) bloggers for a massive swap event called “Swap it Like it’s Hot,” where we all go thrift store shopping, pick out a handful of goodies, and send them to another blogger so they can work their DIY magic on them. Items can range from useful, to beautiful, to just plain ridiculous and everything in between. I can’t wait to see what all of the other bloggers received and what they did with their goods. And I also can’t wait to show you what I got!

Jaime from That’s My Letter sent me some awesome stuff to transform. Here are all of the items I received:

First, I received a pair of brackets:

I gave them each a coat of spray primer and then a coat of Rust-Oleum Ocean Mist spray paint (a pretty mint color). I cut a 1×6 board down to 24″ long and painted it with this gray chalky finish paint, then I attached the brackets for an easy DIY wall shelf.

I love the pretty detailing on the brackets. This shelf is going to my sister and she will be hanging it in my niece’s room.

I also received a trio of tiny Americana birdhouses:

Americana doesn’t really go with our decor, and my boys love birds — like to the point of borderline obsession. I decided to spray paint them fun colors and we will use them as decor in the playroom. You know anytime I have the chance to spray paint something, I’m a happy girl.

And last but not least, I received a pair of wooden holiday boxes/bins:

Since these were painted red, I was afraid the color would bleed through so I sanded them and primed them with a coat of Kilz, and then sprayed them with several coats of white spray paint and primer in one. I taped off some stripes and sprayed them with my favorite metallic gold spray paint.

Here they are now:

I switched out the metal bucket things that were on the mantel and stuck some moss balls in the basket/boxes, and now our mantel has a whole new look.

(Oh, and those chairs are new too. We got them here.)

This was so much fun! Be sure to stop over at Run To Radiance and see what Tania did with the thrift store finds I sent her.

Tune in all week to see the crazy items this talented group of bloggers has been making over! Search the hashtag #swapitlikeitshot on social media to follow along with all the fun or check out our Pinterest Board.

It never ceases to amaze me what a little paint can do to spruce up tired/mismatching pieces. My favorite has to be the wooden holiday boxes! Although those minty brackets are looking mighty fine as well! Bravo!

P.S. Really digging that black and white book!
