As I’ve mentioned before, I am in the process of making over our bedroom and adding a sitting area to one side of the room. I gave our plain-jane dresser a makeover, and this past week I also gave her sister (the armoire) a matching makeover. I don’t want too many things to be “matchy-matchy” in the room, but I figured since the dresser lives on the “sitting area” side of the room, and the armoire is over near the bed, painting them to match will help tie the two sides of the room together. I also really like the crisp white. I used Sherwin-Williams Alabaster for both pieces of furniture, and added new hardware from Hobby Lobby.
I didn’t think to take a “Before” pic until I had already started removing drawers and knobs and then quickly snapped an Instagram photo (I know, bad blogger!), but just picture it looking like the dresser’s “before” pic. Here’s my Instagram pic of the armoire “before.”
And here it is “After.”
I’ll have more photos after I do a little decorating.
And here’s the dresser:
I was able to knock out this project over a matter of a couple days thanks to my mother in-law coming to town to help with the boys while my husband was away on business.
He was gone for 2 weeks, and I think he learned his lesson about leaving for too long because not only is he returning to find a freshly painted armoire, but I also decided to buy a new TV. You see, the TV that is housed inside this armoire is very old (Chris had it before we got together almost 9 years ago and who knows how long before that), and over the past few months it has shown signs of being on its last leg. For instance, it will randomly switch from color to black and white, and then back again. This usually inevitably happens in the mornings during Mickey Mouse Clubhouse or Sesame Street, immediately inducing panic and multiple child meltdowns. (I know, this is a serious first world problem we are dealing with.) So when we removed it from the armoire to paint, I made the executive decision that it wasn’t worth the effort of lugging that thing over and putting it back inside my new pretty armoire. So, a new flat screen sounded like the perfect solution to me. Oh, and a new all-in-one printer too, seeing as how I was already at Best Buy and all. 🙂
Excuse the grainy Instagram photo.
Don’t worry, I notified hubs of my somewhat large-ish (for us) ticket item purchase plans before-hand. We usually don’t splurge on things like that without discussing it first. Anyway, I had a rough day and a new pretty armoire with a new pretty TV inside was the perfect kind of therapy. Oh, and as for the printer – we needed a new one because a certain small child took it upon himself to shove socks and tiny toys inside our old one, which totally broke it. The scanner/copier had already been broken for a few years, but we tried everything to at least salvage the print function and it won’t work at all now. So that was a necessary purchase too, especially with my husband frequently working from home.
Anyway, now that you’ve heard all of my excuses and listened to me go on and on justifying my recent spending spree, I’d also like to add that I just wanted the TV and printer, ok? Sheesh stop giving me the third degree. 😉 Just kidding.
I still have a lot of work to do in this room, and slowly but surely I’m getting there. I still need to find some thrifted chairs and nightstands, figure out bedding and curtains, make pillows and art, etc. I have a vision in my head (which involves a lot of navy blue), so hopefully in the not too distant future it will start coming together.
Have you finished any furniture or room makeovers lately? What types of projects do you have going on?

I HAVE A PIECE OF FURNITURE JUST LIKE THIS, I WAS WONDERING WHAT KIND OF HINGES DID YOU USE? I WANT TO EITHER RE-STAIN OR PAINT MY OLD BEDROOM SET BUT I GOT STUCK ON THE HINGES, LOL I KNOW SEEMS LIKE A JOB THIS BIG SOMETHING ELSE WOULD STUMP ME..THANKS AND YOUR CREATIONS ARE BEAUTIFUL
Erin @ DIY on the Cheap says
I actually didn’t change the hinges, just painted over them. I will say that if you plan on painting it white or a light color, varnish over the knots first and then prime and paint. I should have done this! My knots are bleeding through a little bit now so I’m going to have to touch it up.
