Ok friends, I told you I wasn’t done crafting with clay. I’m having so much fun with it! I recently shared these hand-stamped clay ornaments and this time I decided to make cute little multi-colored DIY Polka Dot mini ball ornaments! (Wow, say that ten times fast.)
What you’ll need:
To shape the ornaments, just break off a little piece of clay and roll it between your palms until it forms a ball. Mine are about 1 inch across or so. Then, take another tiny piece of clay and roll it into a thin strip, and stick it to the top of the bulb to form a “loop” or “hook”. You can bake your clay on a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet. I used a different type of clay this time, mainly just because I was at Michael’s and this is what I found. I used Sculpy white bakeable clay, and I baked it at 275 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes.
After the ornaments cool, you can paint them with acrylic paint. I found it easiest to paint one side at a time since they will roll around and get smudged. Two coats of paint would probably look best, although I was lazy and only painted one coat.
After my acrylic paint dried, I used liquid gilding and just made little “spots” with my brush. I wasn’t precise or picky about my polka dots (we’ll call mine “abstract spots” — sounds much nicer than messy polka dots), but if you are then you might prefer to use a Q-tip or dauber to dot them on. I also painted the “hook” part with the gilding as well.
I tied a little loop of gold cording onto each bulb so that I could hang them.
These would be cute on a little mini-Christmas tree. In fact we have one, so maybe these will find a home on there.
Will you be making any ornaments this year?
