I mentioned last week that I’m taking part in the One Room Challenge hosted by Linda at Calling it Home, and I’m making over our master bedroom. If you’re just joining me, the One Room Challenge is a fun event where 20 designers and over 100 guest bloggers make over a room in their home in 6 weeks time, giving weekly progress updates as we go along. It all ends with the big room reveal. You can check out last week’s post with all of the “before” shots of the room and my design plans HERE.
So far, I’ve added a new headboard which I told you all about here, painted the room (Gray Owl by Benjamin Moore), and scored some new bedding for the room.
Bedding / Chair / Headboard / Bedframe / Box Springs / Throw Pillow
Now, let’s talk action. I swapped out the mirror over the dresser for the one in Jonah’s room. This mirror makes more sense in our room, and vice versa. I used it in the “gender neutral” nursery before we knew that Jonah was a boy, and it is pretty feminine. The octagon mirror in our room is a better fit for his room now, and the gold mirror will work well in our room as I am trying to come up with a balance of feminine and masculine elements in the room. I’ve also hung plain white IKEA curtain panels which I plan on hemming and adding trim to.
Jute Rug / Navy Rug / Mirror / Curtains
I picked out trim to add to the curtains, and I will be using my “lazy girl’s” method of attaching it, which I will share with you soon, along with details on my Greek Key trim source.
I’ve nailed down my plans for lighting and oh my goodness I am so excited about that. It was no easy feat deciding on whether or not we can live without our ceiling fan. We live in the South and it gets brutally hot in the summer, but since we only use the fan for a couple months out of the year, I decided (and convinced Chris) that we can do without it and just get an oscillating fan for those hot months instead. I’m having an awesome chandelier custom made by one of my favorite artisan lighting designers (I’ll spill the beans on this soon) and it’s going to be brass and modern and awesome.
Here’s a look at my updated to do list:
- Paint
- Hem curtains and add trim
- Add new hardware to existing furniture (maybe?)
Swap out mirror with the one in Jonah’s nursery- Swap out glider with something else
- Build a nightstand for one side of the bed
- Add artwork to the walls
- Accessorize
Figure out lighting- Install lighting
I also need to figure out if I’m going to replace the baby glider in the corner with another chair, or just build a large night stand and stick a plant or something in the corner instead. I plan on figuring this out in the coming week.
While I do have some artwork ordered, I will probably DIY some art as well since we have lots of wall space to cover.
Hopefully I’ll have lots more updates to share with you next week! Be sure to visit Calling it Home where you’ll find all of the bloggers’ linked up projects. I’m having fun checking out everyone’s room plans!

Erin, the headboard is really beautiful and this golden mirror really matches your couple room! Can’t wait to see what you will do with the Grek trim! Tks for sharing, kisses ML
Thanks so much, Marcia!
The curtain trim looks gorgeous. I can “see” it on the curtain.
I wonder what’s your lazy girl method. 🙂
Thank you! I hope to finish this project this weekend so I can share next week!
I love everything on your planning board. I’m so excited to see what you do with this space. I know it is going to be incredible. I’ll be following along as I embark on my crazy journey as a guest participant.
Love the idea of trimming out the curtains, I’ve always wanted to try that trick and haven’t done it yet, so I will check out the finished product! I just got done doing my “lazy” version of curtians for my ORC…I just clipped up duvets!
Thanks, Kristin! I’m all about “lazy” versions of just about anything, so I’ll have to check out your duvet curtains!
Erin I adore the direction that your room is headed towards! You did SO much better than I did in my room this week.
I would love for you to share this post at Thoughts of Home on Thursday. I think our readers would really enjoy it!
Good luck in the upcoming week!
Thank you, Laura!
I am excited to see how your room turns out! This is my first time doing the ORC and I am loving the inspiration from others like you to keep me going. Thanks for sharing Erin!
Melissa
Thank you, Melissa! This is my first time doing the ORC too!
Headboard looks really great! I doing Master bedroom, too. But for the challenge, a bathroom. I bet your room update will be fabulous!!
Thank you, Zan! Can’t wait to see your rooms!
I think I’ve just convinced my husband to let me remove the ceiling fan from our master bedroom as well! He did tell me that I could do it, only if I bought him “a really powerful oscillating fan” that can point directly at him. I can’t wait to see your lighting choice, and the rest of the room come together!
Thanks, Jenny! My husband said the same thing about the oscillating fan. Haha!
This is a beautiful room. The way you decorated it with decorative accents is amazing. Good luck for the challenge Erin!
Thank you!
